  2. What’s the difference/benefits of the different firmness?

    • Soft sugar works best for thin hair on arms and legs. If you use the Soft sugar with the paste method, you need to be skilled. I always suggest beginners start with Firm sugar so they have an easier time learning the technique.
Firm sugar works best on coarse hair like underarms and bikini. It also keeps it’s firmness better than softer sugar in the hot areas of the body like underarms and bikini.

  5. You mentioned applying some oil on the skin in areas you are waxing. In school, we were taught to use antiseptic to initially cleanse the area, then a light dust of powder to ensure the area is dry.

I thought if the area was slick (eg with oil), then the hard wax will not stick.

    How does that work exactly?

    • What you are referring to is my video on Brazilian waxing (not sugaring). Powder works to protect the skin. Or you can use oil with certain wax products. The product I used in the video is Berodin blue hard wax. The woman who makes this product line encourages using her Jasmin oil as a protective barrier and to help remove any wax residue afterwards. If you use too much, it does make it hard to apply the wax. That is why I would put a little dab on a gauze 2×2 or 4×4 and then wipe that on the skin so there wasn’t too much. I found that the clients felt less pain when using the oil. It also helps get the wax off easier. The wax will still adhere to the hair but won’t stick to the skin.

      Jasmin Oil: http://www.beelineindustries.com/BerodinBerins-Jasmine-Oil_p_32.html

Of course, since making that video in 2007, I have now discovered that sugaring is an even better method of removing the hair, especially on sensitive skin. You would never use oil with sugaring because it will prevent it from sticking to the hair. In fact, even lotions can make it very difficult. Make sure the skin is clean and dry before doing sugaring. Many antiseptics for waxing won’t work to clean the skin because they are oil based. I recommend witch hazel to clean the skin prior to sugaring. You can view a series of videos that demonstrate the differences between hard wax and sugaring on my Vimeo channel. 6. Hi I don’t have a warmer am I able to place the sugar wax in the microwave or what do you recommend!
    Thank you

    • Yes. The jar is safe for the microwave. It only needs to be softened slightly so 10-30 seconds is usually plenty of time.

  7. I have a little bit of a tummy and I find it hard to do the waxing. I use a mirror but still have issues. Can you give me any advice?

    Laurie

    January 2, 2015

    • Hi Laurie,
Are you having a hard time seeing what you are doing? If so, you may need to do the sugaring by feel. I have a couple videos online where I am trying to sugar my butt crack and I can’t see what I am doing, I just have to do it by feel. Doing smaller sections at a time and making sure the ball of sugar is firm and not melting will help too. The softer sugar is harder to flick off, so if you use the firm one or don’t heat it, that will make it easier to work with.
Was that the main issue? Not being able to see what you are doing because your tummy is in the way? Or are you having other troubles?

    • Thanks for not giving up yet. I know how frustrating it can be when the sugar doesn’t seem to work perfect from the start. Here are some things that could be making it too sticky:
You could be applying it with too much pressure. You don’t want to press it into the skin. Just let it melt onto the skin without much pressure being applied to force it to spread on. It takes patience but worth it because it won’t be so stuck to the skin.
You could have it too warm to begin with. Try heating it less, or not heating it at all.
Did you apply powder to the skin first? Applying just a little bit of powder (talc or corn starch) will help the sugar not stick so much to the skin. It’s especially helpful when getting started.
You might not be getting the ‘flick’ portion. It can be tricky. Make sure that you are applying with your hand perpendicular to the skin. Then when you get to the end where you want to flick from, make sure you go past where any sugar is, drop your hand down flat against the skin and push in a little, then flick fast. Also hold the skin tight with your other hand. Make sure the skin is fully stretched from the spot you are trying to pull the sugar from. If it is not tight, the sugar won’t come off.
Try it again keeping these tips in mind and let me know if any of them help the sugar come off like it does in the youtube videos.

    • Erin,
You amaze me! I’m so happy that you were able to sugar the pubic area on yourself and that you had great results. Wow! I’m ecstatic! If you do ever make a youtube on how to do it, send me the link because I have so many men asking me about how to do it themselves and if I could send them the link to your youtube video (if you so dare!) they would much appreciate being able to see how you do it. It is awkward to video because instead of just focusing on doing the sugaring, you also have to pay attention to the camera and where it’s located and what angle it’s shooting at. Maybe you have someone who could video it for you? Anyway…whether you share the technique with others or just use it on yourself, I am so happy to hear that you are pleased with everything.

  11. would it be ok to use a numbing cream or something to dull the pain from sugaring my wife is having a really hard time dealing with it but she really wants sugar herself

    Adam

    April 20, 2015

    • Yes, you can use a topical numbing cream or spray. Let it sit for 25 minutes, then clean the skin and proceed with the sugaring.
Also taking Tylenol (or something similar) will help relieve some of the pain as well. I’ve also been told that taking a hot bath before helps because it opens the follicles and makes the hair easier to come out. Drinking wine or alcohol is not a good idea because it actually makes people more sensitive to pain.
Eating chocolate has some effect on helping relieve the pain. Let me know if any of these help your wife feel less discomfort during the sugaring treatments.

  12. hi grace, which one is better, using soft sugar or hard sugar for self brazilian, i just have soft sugar at my home, do u have any recommendation about how using it?
i also looked about pink wink cream at your website and i am from indonesia, can i buy ur product from indonesia? where can i looking for shipping cost?
    thank you

    kiki

    April 30, 2015

    • Firm is better for Brazilians. If you use Soft, don’t heat it first. If it starts to get too melted on the skin, use a strip to remove it. Using extra powder with Soft will help too. Keep the sugar on your finger tips and wear gloves so the heat from your hands doesn’t melt the sugar as quickly.
If you want to order Firm sugar, I think it will cost $23.50 for Priority. We can ship to Indonesia. Once you put in the order information and your address, it will calculate shipping cost. I’m not sure if Indonesia has customs charges…but some countries have an additional customs tax or fee.

  13. I just had my first attempts at sugaring my legs and I was having trouble with the wax. The was did pull the long hairs at first but after about 20 seconds of trying the sugar started to melt. And I kept having to get a new ball and trowing away the melted sugar. So I tried to do it with gloves on like you did in some of your video but then the sugar just stuck to the glove and not my legs. Also the sugar at times kept sticking to my skin and no matter in what way I pulled or how hard I flicked my wrist I was not working. I just washed it off. I did manage to get almost all the long hairs but I still feel scratchy. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong? Or any tips on how to not melt the sugar in my hands?

    ruby

    May 12, 2015

    • Thanks for sharing your experience of your first attempts at sugaring. What you are experiencing is very common for anyone learning how to work with the sugar. At first it seems so sticky and melty-like but after you work with it for awhile, you start to learn how to control it. It’s sort of like learning to ride a bike. So I encourage you to keep working with it. It sounds like you have some stubble. Those hairs either broke off with the sugaring or they are another hair growth phase that wasn’t quite long enough yet. They should be ready in about 10-14 days for you to sugar them. A few tips to keeping the sugar from melting in 20 seconds is to do your best to keep the sugar on your fingertips so the heat from your hand doesn’t melt it as quickly. When applying the sugar, it is natural to use a lot of pressure, but because the sugar softens with the body heat, going slower to apply it and letting the body heat melt it on without using any pressure will help. When applying pressure, it creates more friction which heats up the sugar too much. So just let it rest on your skin and use a feather touch to move the sugar over the skin. Wearing the gloves does help. They need to be a very tight fighting glove so the sugar doesn’t pull them off. Using powder on the skin helps a bit to stop the heat from melting the sugar and makes it easier to flick off. There are probably some more tips but try those and let me know how it goes in a couple weeks.

  15. Hi. I ordered your firm wax to do my own Brazilians. All sections went really well except the inside of the labia (the section that usually hurts the most). My hair is really coarse in this area and when I tried to pull the wax off, it just stuck to the hairs (super painful). Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this? I was wondering if it is possible that the wax is not firm enough for my hairs in particular. Please let me know your thoughts.

    Need Help

    July 30, 2015

    • Even though it’s frustrating, what you are describing can be a common challenge when first sugaring the inside labia. The hairs are very stubborn and coarse. Once you have sugared a few times, you will notice that the hairs actually grow back softer and are easier to pull out. My advise is to use extra powder in that area so the sugar will come off the skin easier and any moisture will be absorbed. You also may need to take some breaks. For example, do a few strips and then when it starts getting stuck, rinse off the sugar. Then wait until the next day to get the rest of the hairs. Since it is such a sensitive area and there is thick, coarse hair when starting, it is easier if you do a little at a time (when doing yourself). That way it’s less painful and easier to tolerate. This will probably only be the case on the first 2-3 times. After that, you will be able to sugar the entire area so much faster and with less trouble because the hair will be softer and thinner. Plus you will be getting better at using the product each time too. Sugaring does have a learning curve and the more you do it, the better you become.

This is a very common question that both clients and technicians have so I am happy you asked it.
Brazilian sugaring preferences depend on the technician that does the service. The skin being taut is better for removing the hair but the comfort of the technician may be compromised. It is a good idea to talk to your technician about their preferences. Let us know if you have any other questions. We are happy to help.

  20. Hi Grace,
I saw your product Gold Sugar on Amazon. I need to know the difference between the firmness of the sugar wax. I have bought it before and I normally don’t use sugar wax and buy ready to use veet wax strips which do work for my legs but not my thighs. So, I wanted some advice as to what kind of sugar wax to buy and which one would work best with the areas I want to wax. I would like to attempt to wax my underarms, bikini area, down there, legs and arms. please give me some advice. i tried to e-mail you but i see you haven’t responded so i figure i would give it a chance to leave you a comment. i do not shave due to it not lasting enough. im very interested in your product. thanks-

I apologize for the delay in response. I do not see your original email but will look into the issue with it.
We usually recommend to start with the Firm sugar. The Firm sugar is stiffer and better for learning the sugaring technique. Once you have the hang of it or if you just want to jump right in, I say for under arms and brazilian/bikini I recommend the Medium-Firm and the Medium for legs and arms. If you choose to start out with the Firm sugar it will still get all the hair out of the areas you listed.
